Wilson’s Snipe

I went out to check on the Phalaropes at 29mi and Omo rd and there were a pair of Wilson’s Snipe putting on a show, with the male calling loudly and displaying in the air and chasing the female… Very cool bird…

Wilson’s Phalarope at 29 & OMO in New Haven

On June 2nd, 2017 Tom Heatley found a pair of Wilson’s Phalarope at the wetland mitigation area off of 29 mi rd just west of Omo.. This area is private land and any viewing of the wetland has to be from the road. However, its a country dirt road with minimal traffic.. There also were Semipalmated Sandpipers, Semipalmated Plovers, White-rumped Sandpipers and Spotted Sandpipers in the same location.

Yellow-breasted Chat at Stony Creek Metropark

David Boon found a Yellow-breasted Chat today at Stony Creek Metropark on the Landscape Trail.. It was singing loudly when I got there but it was only giving partial views.. quite the skulker… After everyone left I camped out and it took me an hour just to get some decent photos of it… Such a beautiful bird with a funny personality…

Black and Common Terns at Havey Ensign DNR Boat Launch

I heard yesterday from my birding compadres that Black Terns and Common Terns were at the Harvey Enisign Memorial Boat Launch… Both of these birds are seen every year in small numbers in the county, but do not breed here.. I was told that the Common Terns breed on some of the islands in Lk St. Clair and I know that Black Terns breed in St. Clair County.. This is the first time I have seen them migrating at the same time and hanging out together… They were not real close to shore when I got there, but it was still cool to sit and watch them feeding on the minnows and watch them following the boats as they came out of the marina…
