Tawas Weekend… Birding with a Bachelor

On Saturday I was invited by Tom Hince to be part of a Bachelor Big Day Count for Erik Weyhrauch. Joining the Big Day also was Kevin Rysiewski and Andy Weinrauch. Unfortunatly a 6th member of our team had to cancel at the last minute. We met up at 1130pm and started at Nayanquing Point and got our first bird at 120am… We ended up birding Tawas St. Park, Tuttle Marsh, Kirtland’s Warbler Conservation Area and many other cool birding spots in and around that location. As the day moved slowly toward evening we drove down and birded Port Huron SGA and ended the day with a Peregrine Falcon under the Blue Water Bridge. We had a total of 168 species of birds. I wont list them all but some of the highlights were:

  • Golden-winged Warbler
  • Cerulean Warbler
  • Marbled Godwit
  • Stilt Sandpiper
  • Short billed Dowitcher
  • 14 Barred Owls
  • Sedge Wren
  • 5 Whip-poor-wills
  • Multiple American Bitterns
  • Black Tern
  • Several singing Hermit Thrush at one time
  • Surf Scoter
  • Louisiana Waterthrush
  • Hooded Warbler
  • Black-billed Cuckoo

So many more good birds… An amazing 20 hours spent with a great team… Erik was awesome and a good sport. See photos below.. I personally think its the greatest idea for a Bachelor party that I could think of… I wish him and Gina the best as they are about to get married!!!  Birding with some one of Tom Hince’s caliber was awesome and he put on a clinic… I would Highly recommend taking one of Tom’s tours…  Its very high on my bucket list. http://www.birdwithtom.com/home.html

On Sunday, Kevin, Andy and I returned to Tawas and met up with Jeff Steinmetz and birded another whole day… This was more of a laid back day after the busy Saturday we had… we had an awesome time and got to see Canada Warblers, missed the day before… At Tawas we had a Ruffed Grouse in a tree.. We took a second look at the Kirtland’s Warblers and got a few pics.. We walked along a ravine with a river near the foot dam and got close ups of a Mourning Warbler… We headed to Rifle River Recreation Area near Rose City and Jeff showed us the park… AMAZING!! Awesome spot… Kevin and Jeff got lifer Goshawk and we found an area where Golden-winged Warblers nest and found two hybrids… We added on 6 more species not seen the day before for a weekend total of 174 species…
