a few short birding trips today

I woke up earlier than I wanted too and ended up going out at 0630 to find Woodcock and Barred Owl… I found both of them… The American Woodcock use to nest right behind my home until they demolished the area for a new subdivision… I drove to the edge of the new sub that still borders a wet area with tall grasses and sure enough one was calling this morning… I then headed to Stony Creek Metropark and tried for the Barred Owl at Oakgrove picnic area… This is a common spot for them and I have tried calling for them several times in the last couple of months with no luck… Today with the first call from a recording, one answered back!!  I also headed to Holland Ponds and there was a nice assortment of Waterfowl including American Wigeon, Redhead, Canvasback, Wood Duck, Mallard, Common Merganser and Ring-necked Duck. There also was a Belted Kingfisher hovering around the pond… This afternoon I got word from Jeff Swider that he had Rusty Blackbirds at his house… I went there and at first they were not around, but then they appeared as I was about to leave.. They were mixed in a big flock of Red-winged Blackbirds, Brown-headed Cowbirds and Common Grackles… We also got to see a Screech Owl looking out the hole of a Wood duck box.. Very cool!!
