Common Redpoll flock showed up in the yard…. and they brought a Hoary with them!!!

The flock of Common Redpolls has been hanging out behind my house for over a week… today the whole flock circled my yard and 15 of them landed… I looked out and saw the frosty looking one that I have been seeing… It had almost no streaking on it, more white in the secondaries on the wing and a small bill… the second time it came in I was able to see that its undertail coverts where white with no visible streaking from binocular range… My zoom is in the shop, but I snapped a few shots with my 100mm macro… Looks good for a Hoary to me!!

Update: Jen Anderson and Jeff Steinmetz made my day by letting me borrow one of Jeff’s lenses so I could get better photos!! ┬áThank you so much!!

The Hoary Redpoll hung out all day… at times there were as many as 60-70 Redpolls in my feeders… There was also one White-crowned Sparrow there also.
