Went to Stony Creek Metropark this morning… I checked out Eastwood beach first thing in the morning… a Semi-palmated Sandpiper and an American Pipit were there… then I headed to Winter Cove picnic area and crossed the rock bridge since the water levels are low (they are lowering the lake level so they can work on the bridge)…. There are nice mudflats surrounding the island so I went looking for shorebirds…. There were 6 Pectoral Sandpipers on the flats, Wood and Black Ducks, Killdeer, a pair of Kingfishers and Great Egrets and Great-blue Herons…. I came across a flock of Yellow-rumped Warblers numbering approx 30-40 birds…. they were everywhere… I met up with Kevin and we headed over to Inwood to see if we could spot any birds of prey… for the day I had an Juvenile Bald Eagle, 2 Coopers Hawks, 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk and 4 Red-tailed Hawks… I saw the resident Merlin over by the island buzzing the shorebirds who took off…. I don’t know if they returned…. I also had fun watching a Green Heron hunt off of the edge of the stone bridge…. totally friendly little guy….
