A few of us showed up tonight to look for a reported Red-necked Grebe. The grebe was not there but we managed to see two Iceland Gulls sitting in the parking lot as we were leaving. Andrew Simon noticed them as he drove toward the flock… Nice consolation prize.
Don’t ignore those wood duck boxes when you are walking thru the woods… never know what will be looking out at you!!
Some sure signs of migration this week. I saw plenty of Tree Swallows at LSCMP.. Report of a Virginia Rail from Andrea Meldrum. I had my first Wilson’s Snipe calling at LSCMP at Pointe Rosa Marsh. By next week Vesper Sparrows should be back as well as Savannah Sparrows. A couple of photos below from a walk after work at LSCMP yesterday.
I saw my first Pileated Woodpecker of the year today on Mt. Vernon Rd near the Capuchen Retreat… This has been a reliable spot for them. They like the plot of woods that border Mt Vernon that are in front of a subdivision…
