Golden-crowned Sparrow and Harris Sparrow

On a last minute trip, I headed to Jackson today for the Harlequin Duck with Kevin Rysiewski and Andrea Meldrum… It was last seen at 0904 and we got there at 1030 and left at 330 pm and never saw it… Bummed out we headed to Jerry Jourdan’s home to look for the Golden-crowned Sparrow and the Harris Sparrow that have been coming to his feeders…. The first bird that we saw was the Golden-crowned…. Then a Cooper’s Hawk decided to make an appearance and all the birds disappeared…  I volunteered to chase it away but it only flew over a few trees and landed… It was getting dark and finally the Hawk took off and the Harris Sparrow showed up under the neighbors feeders almost immediately… Both birds lifer for me…

Cackling Geese at Stony Creek…

I somehow missed Cackling Goose last year for my county list… So it was nice today when I got a text that the Stony Bird Walk group and Andy Weinrauch had found some near Baypoint beach… I got there and Brian and Marie Mcgee were looking at them thru their scopes… 6 of them hanging with a flock of Canada Geese… Some others reported 8, but there were clearly 6 that I photographed…

Other birds of interest on the the lake today was a Merlin that was buzzing Baypointe Beach and a few Eagles around… There was a report of a Red-necked Grebe on the lake and I was surprised with all the people scoping the lake today, only one person saw it… no photos with the sighting…

Great first day of the year – Long eared Owl

2015 was a fun year for birding, but also a little frustrating… I loved going to Tawas for the first time in May and showing Andrea her first Kirtland Warbler.. Spent a great day at Pointe Mouillee with Jim Fowler and Tom Heatley and the Macomb Audubon group and saw so many great birds that day…  There were many other great days, but I also missed a few birds that I should have normally seen in Macomb County and ended up at 226 species in the county for the year… This year there were 8 individuals on Ebird that saw 200 or more in the county… Very cool!!

Today I started the New Year by birding Stony Creek Metropark, Wilcox Warnes nature area and the feeders at the Swider nature sanctuary… Highlights were Pileated Woodpecker, Red-breasted Nuthatch and Long-eared Owl… I don’t give away Owl locations, but this was at Stony Creek Metropark…. Very Cool…
