Cooper’s Hawk = quiet feeders

I have been swamped since I got back from Mexico and no time to bird… I drove by my favorite feeders at a house on 31 mile rd… All the feeders are in the front yard and its a good place to check out… they have multiple feeders and the place is usually rocking… I pull up today and its as quiet as a library. Of course when that happens, you know what must be lurking around…

Mexico – Non birding trip

The wife and I escaped to Mexico for 5 nights and returned on Thursday… It was not a birding trip, but I still managed to get a little bit of birding in at the resort.. We were at the Valentin Imperial Maya in Riveria Maya, south of Cancun… It was very interesting seeing the bird life on the resort in January… there were many birds from the US and Canada that were wintering in the area…   Every morning and evening the flock of Yucatan Jays would come to our balcony looking for handouts… I found 3 Ferruginous Pygmy Owls on the Resort and one like to call from the trees right near our balcony. Such an amazing owl… At 6 inches they are amazing to see. We saw some very large bats one night right after the rain at dusk… there wingspan was over a foot and they were flying right around our heads… they were fascinating.. they would land on the tree branches and hang upside down for a second or two and then take off flying around us…

Snow Buntings are back on Teller Rd

I got a call from Tom Heatley about a Rough-legged Hawk that he had found on 27mi and Indian Trail… While I was talking with him he was driving down Teller Rd and came across a huge flock of Snow Buntings… and while I was talking with him, I came across a huge flock of Snow Buntings on Indian Trail Rd… It was funny… His flock was bigger than mine.. LOL.. I headed over to see his birds and managed a decent photo of the flock in flight..

Northern Shrike

Its been a tough winter for finding Northern Shrikes in Macomb County for me… Tom Heatley found one yesterday in a row of trees next to a farm field at 29 and Lowe Plank Rd… It was raining and dark out but I was on the way home from work when i got the text and headed there and it was still perched in the tree… I couldn’t get close to it so a documentation shot was all I got…
