I birded at Wetzel State Park in New Haven this morning… Nothing too unusual… I saw some cool dragonflies, freshly hatched and there were Morning Cloaks and Spring Azure butterflies… Birdwise, nothing too out of the ordinary… Pied-billed Grebes, Eastern Towhee, Field Sparrows and Swamp Sparrows. I did hear what I thought was a male Ring-necked Pheasant… but what came out of the thickets was not what I thought it was going to be… It was a Melanistic Mutant Pheasant, a mutant variety of the Ring-necked Pheasant from what I read on the web… After that I went to see a Purple Finch coming to the feeders at Jeff Steinmetz home… so cool!! Thanks Jeff!!
I have been in Grand Rapids for work most of the week and had a few birds on the card from the camera… So I thought I would get caught up and post a few pics from the week.
Birds are still trickling in… I had a nice morning birding with Tom Heatley. We had a couple of Virginia Rails in the South Marsh.. In the Maple Woods there were Rusty Blackbirds, Hermit Thrush, White-throated Sparrow, Golden-crowned Kinglets and a Winter Wren… Wilson Snipe were flying over Pointe Rosa Marsh.. I had a couple of Ruby-crowned Kinglets on the trails behind the nature center and a Fox Sparrow in the meadow. One Sandhill Crane flyover. At home I found a Savannah Sparrow in the empty lots behind my home where they are building houses. Perfect lighting and I snapped a bunch of photos of this cooperative Sparrow.
More birds are starting to show up. I was out of town for work this week, but when I got home and went in to the woods after work today, the woods were alive!! Misc photos of some FOY birds for me… Vesper and Field Sparrows are back… I had Vesper off of teller road between 27 and 28 mile rd and Field Sparrows at Stony Creek Metropark.. A beautiful Wilson’s Snipe gave me some close views at LSCMP. There were Blue-winged Teal in the south marsh at that location and I saw my first Yellow-bellied Sapsucker of the year there… One has been seen there for over a month but only by one birder. Ospreys are back at Inwood…. They are rebuilding there nest that was removed last year for maintenance on the tower.
