Long-eared Owl at Stony Creek Inwood

Took a walk with Kevin Rysiewski and Wayne Hoch today to look for Long-eared Owls… We found one perched and flushed another… Wayne got on his stomach in the snow and shot up into the tree to get a decent photo and video… It was a lifer for him… I have been asked on how to find Long-eared owls… no formula except look in dense stands of pines or thickets in an area with plenty of mice and voles to eat and hopefully you will get lucky…

Its warming up… 28 degrees… Yea!!

After work I hit a few of my favorite winter hotspots… At the DNR Boat Launch off of south river rd in Harrison Twp I saw my FOY Long-tailed Duck… it was mixed in with a flock of Common Mergansers, Redhead and Canvasbacks… Out on the Ice there were 3 bald eagles.. I found some Eastern Bluebirds at Wolcott Mills metropark and the Snow Buntings were missing from 30mi and Gramer Rd… I did managed to get some nice photos of Juncos and Goldfinches at that location… I saw a female Northern Harrier at 30mi and Omo Rd…

Cold day birding from car

January is going to be a crazy work month for me… I am out of town several times and birding will be almost non-existent. However, I got out for 3 hours today. I headed to the dump at 28 mi and Frost Rd and it did not disappoint.. 3 Bald Eagles were there today, 15 Red-tailed Hawks and a dark phase Rough-legged Hawk. The Gulls were either high up in the air or roosting out of sight, so I took off down County Line Rd to 30 mi Rd where I found a group of gulls sitting in the field. There was a Lesser Black-backed Gull sitting on the ground with the rest of them. A Greater Black-backed Gull buzzed the group but did not land. The rest were mostly Herring Gulls… Down the road on 30 mi near Havenridge Rd I came across 3 Ring-necked Pheasants feeding in a field. I found a flock of Cedar Waxwings on Bates Rd and 29 mi.. On Omo Rd I found a male Northern Harrier buzzing the fields that back up to Wetzel State Park… I headed home and found a dark phase Rough-legged Hawk sitting in a tree near Ray Center Rd and 26 mi Rd… I managed to get a couple of picks out the car window before it took off… nothing more than documentation shots… all in all a good day birding and I never left the car!!
