Spring better come soon or else I am gonna go crazy….

So I have been doing a little bit of car birding lately… I am so sick of winter, I do not feel like climbing out of my car and freezing… I have visited the dump off of 28 mi rd in New Haven a few times… I am looking for Thayer’s Gulls or Lesser Black-Backed Gulls… No luck yet…. There are plenty of Herring, Ring-billed, Greater Black-backed and Glaucous Gulls in various cycles… I am not a great “gull” birder, but I am working on it… The other day I had a Juvenile Bald Eagle fly by the dump… that was cool and there are many Red-tailed Hawks around…

On Saturday I took a run up to Port Huron to look at all the Long-tailed Ducks… there were thousands of them… there also were Common Goldeneye, Red-breasted Merganser and Bufflehead near the bridge and Redhead and Canvasbacks up the river by downtown…

Muskegon Birding

I was in Grand Rapids for work yesterday and found myself with a couple of hours in the middle of my day that were open… So I hopped in my car and headed to Muskegon to see if I could view the Barrow’s Goldeneye that has been found there. I pulled up to the parking area near the Silversides Museum and the Channel was full of Ducks… Many Long-tailed Ducks, Greater Scaup, 20 White-winged Scoter, Common Goldeneye and a couple of Redheads… I did not find the Barrow’s but I did find the King Eider 1st winter plumage across the channel on the opposite shore area… To far for good photos… Cool spot..

DNR Point on South River Rd, Harrison Twp – White-winged Scoter

I did not get to bird last week due to being out of town for work… So when I heard on Sunday that a White-winged Scoter and a Long-tailed Duck were at the DNR point at the end of South River Rd I had to get over there… The Scoter and the Long-tailed Ducked offered some close ups… There also were some Tundra Swans on the open water south of the point… I lucked out and the Snowy Owl that has been reported was there and buzzed the pond… The White-winged Scoter even had some ice on his back at day break but when I got off of work he looked all warmed up at 5pm…. There were many Canvasbacks, Greater Scaup, Red-breasted and Common Mergansers, Ruddy Duck, Bufflehead, Common Goldeneye and a couple of Ring-necked Ducks…. Thanks to Eric Domurat for the heads up yesterday on the ducks!
