Henslow’s Sparrow

I got a tip from Kevin on the location of Henslow’s Sparrows in Genesee County at Flushing Twp Nature Park… I got up early and hit the trail at dawn before work… It took a little bit to find them, but there was a breeding pair that I came across… I got too close to their nesting area and they were both moving around me… not coming to close but visibly upset… So I backed off of the area, got some photographs from a safe distance and headed back toward detroit to go to work…. This is a Lifer for me!!

In between appointments…

I had some time before my 430pm appt in Rochester today…. I found two Vesper Sparrows… one on Inwood Rd near the Stony Creek Nature Ctr and one on Broughton Rd where I usually find them… I also was sitting in the parking lot at Wetzel and I noticed a small flock of Cedar Waxwings eating some berries in a bush… I slowly moved my car that way and managed a couple of shots before I had to leave and head west toward my appointment….

Nice walk at Stony Creek…

I took a 4 mile walk at Stony Creek Metropark tonight in the West Branch Area…. This is a very nice area… I had two Wood Thrush, a Black-billed Cuckoo, 3 Indigo Buntings, Warbling Vireo, Ovenbird, Yellow Warbler, Great-crested Flycatcher, Eastern Wood Pewee and a few other normal breeders for the park… Lots of Dragonflies around and the Baltimore Butterflies have hatched out… I love these little checkered butterflies…

Sleeping Bear Birding Trail headquarters is now open

Stop in the Sleeping Bear Birding Trail headquarters if you are up in the area…. Today they had 20 birders stop in… Very proud of my life long friend and birding buddy of 40 years, Mick Seymour,  for being one of the key people in getting this project off the ground… I cant wait to get up there and see the headquarters…

Lots of birds at Wolcott Mills Metropark…. Just no pics… so Dragonflies it is…

I took a run to Wolcott Mills Metropark today after work… I had Orchard Oriole, Wood Thrush, Cedar Waxwings, Blue-winged Warbler, Scarlet Tanager, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Red-eyed Vireo, Indigo Buntings and Willow flycatchers, plus the regular bunch…. no good photo opportunities so I turned to butterflies and Dragonflies… I used my 150-500mm zoom…. This is the second time I have tried this with the dragonflies… Its great because of the range, but the photos are soft compared to my Canon 100mm 2.8 Macro… I will probably use a combination of the both of them in the future…
