Henslow’s Sparrow

Henslow’s Sparrows have suffered steep declines in the State of Michigan… There conservation status is listed as threatened in Michigan… So therefore, even though I am glad to share a few pictures of the Henslow’s Sparrow found in  Macomb County this morning, I am keeping mum on its location…  Sorry….

Grasshopper Fields Forever……

Kevin Rysiewski and I birded the Ford Field Area this morning in Shelby Twp… I had quickly visited this area a few days ago and found a Grasshopper Sparrow on the fringe… Ed Lewandowski had recently had up to a dozen Grasshopper Sparrows here so I decided to come back on the weekend and give it a shot… It did not disappoint…

When Kevin and I first hit the field we found our first of over a dozen Grasshopper Sparrows… There were also Savannah Sparrows calling as well as a Willow Flycatcher in the distance… We decided to take a big perimeter sweep of the fields and who knows what may pop up…. We had many Grasshopper Sparrows, Savannah Sparrows, Song Sparrows, Eastern Kingbirds, several Eastern Meadowlark, American Kestrel, Imm Coopers/Sharp-shinned Hawk, Spotted Sandpiper (there are wet bogg areas.. must wear boots), Horned Lark, Cedar Waxwings, Eastern Bluebird and several Willow Flycatchers… The surprise of the day was an Alder Flycatcher as we were leaving… I thought I heard one call when we came into the fields, in the brushy wet area behind the retention pond…. on the way out it began singing again… it was also using its rrreea call… which is very different from the Willow Flycatcher… I played a few bars of its song and it came right to us and sat on a branch in front of us…  Then two Willow flycatchers came and chased it away… talk about a territory scrap…. it was very cool….

This is a great area although there are no trails to walk on….

Here is a video taken by Kevin Rysiewski..

Ford Field aka Sparrow Fields

I took a run by Ford Field today after I had heard from Ed :Lewandowski that he had a dozen Grasshopper Sparrows there… He was right… they were very easy to find… less than 150 yards from the parking lot… I entered into the park off of 23 mile rd… I also found Horned Larks in the field near the old proving grounds… The had a couple of young ones with them…. A Meadowlark was making a big racket….There were Savannah Sparrows everywhere!!!

Yellow-breasted Chat – Stony Creek Metropark

Last year in June I received a call from Mike Mencotti that he had found a Dickcissel near Stony Creek… Yesterday I got a call from Mike that he found a Yellow-breasted Chat at Stony… He is Mr. Birder for the month of June!!  Great find… I got to the trail near the Stony Creek Nature Ctr this morning at 0555 and found the chat… It was pretty vocal this early in the morning and it offered some decent views for a few minutes as it was moving around looking for food… It was very curious at this guy with the big camera… and popped up out of the bushes a few times to take a look at me… Kevin showed up and we watched it for a short time and moved on…. The Osprey pair were sitting on top of the nest and at day break I heard the Barred Owl calling from the woods near Inwood Rd….
