I found myself out of work a little early today, so I headed to the DNR Pointe on South River Rd… There is an area of open water there and there were huge rafts of Ducks and about 30 Tundra Swans…. It was cold (9 degrees) and breezy so I did not spend much time there, but I managed to get some pictures… Canvasbacks, Greater and Lesser Scaup, Ruddy Duck, Common Merganser, Bufflehead, Common Goldeneye, Redhead and Mallards…. I was also shooting some long distance photos of Gulls that were diving at the ducks…. When I got home and looked at them, I have a photo of a Black-backed Gull…. bill looks more like Greater, but the wingtips look more like Lesser…. In the one shot however, is what I believe is a 1st Winter Lesser Black-backed Gull with its Dark inner primaries and pale uppertail coverts….
Here is a great photo that my friend Mick Seymour took of the Northern Hawk Owl that is in the UP…. This would be a lifer for me and I am very tempted to take the drive up and see it…..
This is a great short video taken by Kevin Rysiewski yesterday from the UP…. Its a great shot of a Hoary Redpoll feeding…. Love the look of this bird… Kevin drove a total of over 780 miles in one day to go to the UP and see the Hawk Owl…. the Hoary was a bonus on the trip!!
Took a quick run out to the park today… I was working in Mt. Clemens and figured that I would go to my 100%, money spot for Winter Wren!! Ahhh Nada…. No wren…. That’s alright, I still enjoyed my walk…. I did manage to see a ton of White-throated Sparrows in a couple of different locations…. Tom Heatley and Barb Baldinger and the Macomb Audubon group were there…. They saw a Bald Eagle fly over and Tom found the Great Horned Owl….
I had to be in Rochester this morning by 0830… I figured that I would stop at Holland Ponds at dawn and see the Ring-necked Duck that has been reported in the pond there… Sure enough it was there… also there were about 20 Mallards and a flock of Canada Geese… I looked at the flock and immediately noticed the little guy swimming in the middle… short bill and short necked… half the size of the Geese it was with… Sweet!! A Cackling Goose… I also had a Belted Kingfisher…. Later in the day after work I managed to see the Pine Siskens at Stoney Creek Nature Center…. there were about 6 in and out of the feeders…. One even posed for me outside near the side of the building….
