A couple of weeks ago I saw a couple of Iceland Gulls on a tip from Tom Heatley… I went the next day in the am and found them…. Kevin Rysiewski and I have visited Brandenburg Park in New Baltimore several times since that day and have not been able to find them again…. I got a text from Kevin that he finally saw two of them, as well as Greater Black-backed, Lesser Black-backed and Glaucous Gull tonight at Brandenburg… He was in the company of Brandon and Alan Ryff (who is a great resource when it comes to identifying these gulls and there multiple Imm plumages)… Kevin sent me a couple of pics that he took… the one is a little blurry, but I posted it because it looks exactly like the gull I saw….. This is a great spot to keep an eye on this winter…. Thayers Gull has been seen there as well…..
All those involved in the Macomb Audobon Christmas Count met at Stoney Creek Nature Center tonight for the Talley… We had Soup and deserts… It was a very nice evening… 2 Northern Shrikes at Wetzel, Tundra Swans at Stoney and Cackling Geese at a couple of locations were some of the highlights…. Its hard to believe that this year is coming to a close…. I will post the final numbers and species when they are published and forwarded to me….. I am whipped after hiking about 5 miles today….
I just walked in from spending all morning hiking thru the woods for the count… I walked the Wolcott Mills Golf Course and surrounding woods all the way to 28 mi rd… then I walked the 240 acres behind my home… No real suprises… just the usual winter birds… I did have a Belted Kingfisher and a Great Blue Heron…. Looking forward to the tally tonight to see what everyone saw…..
Stopped by Stoney today after work… the lake was rockin!! Tundra Swans, Common and Hooded Mergansers, 200+ gulls, Buffleheads, Ruddy Ducks, Canada Geese… I took the rock bridge over to the island and saw a Merlin… I also came across a large flock of Golden-crowned Kinglets and 6 Brown Creepers…. Those Kinglets are hard to photograph…. on the way off of the island, I spied a Red-tailed Hawk sitting in a tree as the sun was setting…. Looking forward to the Macomb Audubon Christmas count tomorrow…
